In 1955, he was elected mayor o f the town and pushedfor incorporation of Dartmouth as a c ity, a feat accomplished in 1961.During this time , he ser ved as president of the Union of Nova ScotiaMunicipalitie s and of the Canadian Federation of Mayors. Mr. Akerleygav e up the mayoralty in 1963 to offer for the Provincial Legi slature,as a Progressive Conservative candidate. He won el ection that year forHalifax County -Dartmouth, was re-ele cted in 1967 for Dartmouth South.He entered the Provincia l Government in 1964 as Minister ofAgriculture, a post h e held until 1968 when he became Minister ofHighways. He r esigned with the Government of Premier G. I. Smith in1970.
