  spent much of his life at sea although he learned the black smith andwoodworking trades as well. At Boston, he becam e a carpenter, wasemployed as a cabinet maker, and saile d as part of a ship's maintenancecrew. He earned his capta in's papers while spending years as first mateon ships ou t of Boston. After travelling the world, he returned to Pugwash where he opened a harness shop.
